What is self esteem?
Self-esteem is one’s evaluation of oneself. The word “self” in the term refers to oneself as being an individual, not being a part of something else or someone else.
Someone with high self-esteem would say that they are intelligent, good at what they do and likeable. They may also value themselves for their sense of humor, compassion or other characteristics that are important to them.
Low self-esteem individuals might have difficulty accepting compliments or feel embarrassed about themselves when they make mistakes.
They may avoid situations where risk is involved because it will provide opportunities to be rejected by others and expose their weaknesses.
Which Are Ways To Build Self Esteem

We have 3 ways to build self esteem. We are going to do it through practicing acceptance, feeling good about yourself and achieving your goals.
One way we can build self-esteem is by practicing acceptance of ourselves and others. This means that we stop telling ourselves that we or someone else should be different than what they are.
For example, one may practice acceptance by telling themselves ‘I shouldn’t have yelled at her because she didn’t deserve it.’ Instead you would replace the word shouldn’t with should have by saying to yourself ‘ I should’ve accepted that she didn’t deserve it and shown restraint instead of yelling.’
This practice allows us to take responsibility for our actions while keeping an open heart and mind so that we can move forward.
Next, one way to build self-esteem is by thinking positively about ourselves. When we think positively it means that when negative thoughts come up in your head you replace them with positive ones.
You can do this by silently repeating “I am calm” or “I am strong”. By thinking positively we are able to see our strength. We also decrease the stress and anxiety we feel, which makes us feel good about ourselves.
This way is to achieve your goals! When you work hard to achieve something it feeds back into your self-esteem. When you achieve your goals you feel good because you know that hard work pays off!
These are the ways to build self esteem, they are practicing acceptance, thinking positively and achieving your goals! They can be used individually or altogether at once depending on the situation.
If you apply these three things I guarantee it will help you build self esteem.
Why High Self Esteem is Important?
High self-esteem is good for you and important because it can help you:
- Be more creative and productive at work
- Take better care of yourself, such as sleeping well, eating well and exercising regularly.
- Live longer and healthier lives
- Form stable relationships with friends, partners and children. People with high self-esteem tend to be more socially skilled and popular.
- Be happier
- Have positive relationships with other people, even if you disagree with them or they let you down.

How to build self esteem?
The following are different ways in which you could build your own self-esteem. Take time to read through these suggestions and select the ones that you think will work for you. Remember that everyone’s needs are unique, so it might be necessary to use some techniques from each category in order to build self-esteem.
Take note of these techniques and use them in your own time in a way that is suitable and comfortable for you:
Tip 1: Focus on the positive: highlight your strengths and achievements
Focus on your positive qualities or characteristics, such as compassion, creativity or sense of humor. List down all the things that you like about yourself, including physical attributes or personality traits.
Tip 2: Understand your negative thinking and where it comes from
Everyone has negative thoughts sometimes, but if these thoughts take over your mind and prevent you from seeing anything positive in yourself or others, then they may be causing you to have low self-esteem.
Some common negative thoughts that you may have about yourself include: “I am not good enough”, “I am useless” or “I am a bad person”. You might feel as though all these thoughts are true, but try to keep in mind that this is just your brain trying to protect itself.
Negative thinking usually arises from events, such as failure or rejection, that have contributed to your self-esteem issues in the past. Try to pinpoint where this negative thinking has stemmed from and then work on stopping it and replacing it with positive thoughts about yourself and your abilities.
Tip 3: Improve your self-talk Self-talk is a term used to refer to the thoughts that run through your head. These can be positive or negative, and they affect your feelings about yourself.
Negative self-talk is common among people with low self-esteem because it tries to protect you from hurt by reminding you of things that you cannot do. By constantly dwelling on this type of thought, it will become a habit and your self-esteem will gradually decrease.
If you find yourself constantly thinking negative thoughts about yourself, try to stop them as soon as they occur and replace them with positive ones that support your abilities and achievements. You can practice this by saying to yourself: “Stop”, “I am having a bad thought” or “This is just my negative self-talk talking, not my true thoughts”.
Tip 4: Be generous with your acceptance of others
People with low self-esteem are usually very critical of themselves and have a hard time accepting their own mistakes. They are also unable to see the positives in other people. By being overly critical towards yourself, you are decreasing your self-esteem.
By learning to be accepting of the people around you, including your flaws and mistakes, you will also become much more able to accept yourself. When someone does something negative towards you, learn from it instead of dwelling on it. Accept that this is their issue and not yours. By doing this one simple technique, you will greatly improve your self-esteem.
Tip 5: Be proud of who you are
Everyone has a unique set of qualities, and it is these differences that make each person special. You might not be a superstar athlete or a best-selling writer, but that does not mean that there is anything wrong with you. Everyone’s strengths and abilities are different, and you should be proud of who you are.
Tip 6: Learn to love yourself unconditionally
Many times, people with low self-esteem are either too hard on themselves or simply neglect their own needs in favor of caring for others. These actions will only make your self-esteem issues worse because instead of feeling bad about yourself, you might treat others badly.
People who love themselves unconditionally realize their own importance and understand that it is important for them to create a happy life for themselves.
They are able to adapt the selfless act of caring for others into caring about themselves as well. This prevents them from neglecting or putting themselves down, which will make their self-esteem issues disappear.
These are just a few suggestions on how to build your self esteem. There are many other ways that you can do this, including joining support groups, talking to friends and family about your feelings, getting involved with the community, taking up new hobbies or writing in a journal.
Try some of these techniques until you find what works for you. Learning to love yourself and your abilities will decrease your self-esteem issues and help you feel confident in who you are.
